Local Solutions, Lasting Impact
In the wake of Hurricane Helene’s devastation across North and South Carolina, communities faced urgent needs—from damaged infrastructure to disrupted food supply chains. As Executive Director of Feeding the Carolinas (FTC), Mike Darrow led a bold, locally driven recovery initiative that empowered grassroots organizations to rebuild with speed and dignity.
Mike’s guiding principle—“local problems, local solutions”—was shaped by his earlier work at the NC Association of Free Clinics, where he launched a local funding model to expand community-based healthcare. At FTC, he adapted this approach to nourish storm-impacted communities through food banks and pantries.
Mike spearheaded the creation of the FTC Helene Recovery Local Grant Fund, a rapid-response funding mechanism designed to:
across every federally declared disaster county in NC and SC
to support urgent recovery needs
just fast, mission-aligned action
At a disaster recovery meeting hosted by MANNA Food Bank, Mike met several local heroes whose stories exemplify the fund’s success. Judy, from In His Hands Food Pantry, and Babara, from the Hunger Coalition of Transylvania County, were able to restore delivery capacity thanks to new trucks provided by the Grant Fund. Meanwhile, Sara, of Sharing House, used Grant Fund resources to acquire a perishable-food storage unit for distribution. And Sara with Sharing House utilized Grant Fund resources to acquire a PD for perishable food storage and distribution.
These leaders didn’t wait for top-down solutions – they acted. The fund simply gave them the boost they needed to keep serving.
Mike’s work on the Helene Recovery Fund exemplifies how strategic leadership, trust in local expertise, and streamlined execution can amplify impact. It’s a model he continues to build on through Mike Darrow Nonprofit Consulting—helping organizations align mission, strategy, and tools for sustainable change.
“THIS is what leveraging your talents in service to others is all about. And where I am heading as I look to multiply impact in serving.”
– Mike Darrow
The Impossible Grant
When Mike Darrow stepped into the role of Executive Director at the North Carolina Association of Free Clinics (NCAFC), he inherited a legacy-defining achievement: a $10 million, five-year grant from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation (BCBSNC). The grant had transformed the landscape of care for uninsured North Carolinians.
But there was a catch: BCBSNC made it clear—this was a one-time grant, never to be repeated.
The Challenge
Despite the finality of that message, Mike faced a chorus of clinic directors with one urgent hope: “Can we get the grant again?” Rather than accept the status quo, Mike saw an opportunity to reframe the conversation—not by lobbying, but by cultivating trust, sharing vision, and building a true partnership.
Strategy: The “What If” Campaign
Over two years, Mike launched a quiet but powerful campaign rooted in possibility:
Eventually, BCBSNC asked: “If we were to consider another grant, what would it look like? Mike was ready. A proposal was submitted immediately, resulting in a grant of $12 million over 5 years, a 20% increase over the original “impossible” grant.
This case exemplifies Mike’s core philosophy: strategic persistence, authentic relationships, and visionary leadership can unlock transformational funding – even when the odds say otherwise.
“Persistence, patience, and building a relationship is my strongest skill set—and my favorite.”

Launching NC MedAssist
When Mike Darrow assumed leadership as Executive Director of the North Carolina Association of Free Clinics (NCAFC), he identified a foundational priority: building strategic relationships across the state. His approach was clear—engage deeply with both public and private leaders to elevate the mission of free clinics and expand access to care for the uninsured.
Strategic Engagement
Mike invested significant time meeting with foundation executives, state department heads, and public officials, including the Office of the State Attorney General. Another pivotal relationship was with Attorney General Roy Cooper, whom Mike met at a statewide gathering. Seizing the opportunity, Mike offered to visit Raleigh and share the vision behind NCAFC’s work.
The Vision: A Statewide Central Fill Pharmacy
During their meeting, AG Cooper asked a powerful question: “What visionary project are you dreaming about?” Mike shared his bold idea:
Some time later, the AG’s office received a settlement from a vitamin manufacturer, with funds earmarked for medication access. AG Cooper remembered Mike’s vision and reached out. Soon thereafter, Mike facilitated a collaboration between NCAFC, Attorney General Roy Cooper and MedAssist, a Mecklenburg County nonprofit already operating a local central fill model.
Together, they expanded MedAssist’s operations to serve the entire state – creating NC MedAssist, a statewide central fill pharmacy that now provides free medications to uninsured residents across North Carolina.
“The most valuable relationships aren’t built around funding asks – they’re built around shared vision and trust. When cultivated authentically, they can become something much more.”
– Mike Darrow
